Arts.For.Equity
Arts.For.Equity is a workshop series that consists of diversity and arts for change workshops, where youth ages 13-18 explore ideas about Canadian identity, stereotypes and the effects of media. This project is an opportunity for youth to express themselves and their communities through the arts in creative and transformative ways. Participants work with four of Toronto’s top artists, engaging in art streams such as dance, photography, visual and performance art.
This year, in partnership with Manifesto Community Projects, UNITY Charity and the Art Gallery of Ontario, youth from all across the GTA became more self-aware and empowered to make change in their communities. They were inspired to speak up about issues of prejudice and discrimination in their lives and in their communities through the different art forms. Participants had a chance to work with artists such as Tobias Wang, Nylda Gallardo-Lopez, Ravi Jain, and Julla Shanghavi. The workshop series ran from August 31, 2009 to September 4, 2009, with a final exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario on September 10, 2009. We are especially grateful to the Art Gallery of Ontario and Citizenship and Immigration Canada for their support.
