Calling All Educators: Participate in our Survey on Discriminatory Language in K-12 Schools

As a network of committed educators, we are deeply concerned about the persistent issue of harmful and discriminatory language within K-12 schools. Language has immense power, shaping not only how we perceive the world but also how we treat one another. In schools, where young minds are molded and impressions are formed, it is paramount that we foster environments that are inclusive, respectful, and safe for all students.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, instances of harmful language persist in schools across Ontario and Canada. Whether it’s racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, faith-based, or any other form of discrimination, such language can have profound and lasting effects on students’ well-being, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. We must address this issue head-on and work towards eradicating it from our classrooms.

To better understand the prevalence and impact of discriminatory language in school spaces, as well as the challenges in responding to and addressing these incidents, we are launching a comprehensive survey. This survey aims to gather insights from educators like you who are on the front lines, witnessing the dynamics of language use in classrooms and hallways every day.

The results of this survey will serve as a foundation for the creation of resources, the development of best practices, and the implementation of solutions to combat harmful language in educational settings. By participating in this survey, you will contribute to a collective effort to promote inclusivity, equity, and respect in our schools.
