Words Matter Campaign: Share Your Story

The Words Matter Campaign aims to address the impact of harmful and discriminatory language in school spaces. We believe that sharing personal stories can shift understanding and inspire action, fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity in schools.

Why Your Story Matters

We know that student voices and real life experiences are integral to helping educators and the whole school community reflect on the real impacts of harmful language. By sharing your experiences—whether through video, art, multimedia, or written documents—you can help drive change and create a safer, more supportive school environment.

Key Questions to Consider

To help guide your story, here are some key questions based on our campaign videos:

For Students:

  • Can you share a personal story about a time when you experienced or witnessed harmful language in school? How did it make you feel?
  • How would you like to have seen educators and principals or your parents/caregivers respond when the situation occurred?
  • What changes would you like to see in your school to prevent or address harmful language?

For Educators:

  • Can you provide an example of a situation where harmful language impacted a student or the school environment?
  • How did this situation affect your understanding of the importance of addressing such language?
  • What best practices should educators and administrators put in place in both addressing the incident and supporting any students that may have been harmed?

For Parents/Caregivers:

  • How do you approach conversations with your child about harmful language?
  • What strategies do you find effective for helping your youth understand the impact of harmful language if they were the one using it?
  • What strategies do you find effecting for supporting youth who have been harmed or targeted by harmful and discriminatory language?
